How it works
How to convert PDF to OFX
Upload the statement PDF
Choose a text PDF, a scanned PDF or a photo, up to 20 MB and 50 pages. Password-protected PDFs are unlocked in your browser; the password is never uploaded.
Review the reconciliation
Each row's running balance is checked against the previous balance plus the transaction amount. Rows that do not reconcile, or that have no date or amount, are highlighted so you can compare them with the original.
Download the OFX file
Enter an account number or nickname (required): a different one for each bank account, the same one every month, so your accounting app keeps accounts apart. Then download the .ofx file and import it.
Balance-checked export
Why the balance check comes before the OFX export
A spreadsheet lets you fix a wrong row before anyone sees it. An OFX import does not: GnuCash, Xero and QuickBooks post every amount in the file straight into the account register, and a single misread digit carries forward into every later balance. That is why this converter reconciles the statement before it writes the file.
When all balances reconcile, the OFX download is ready immediately and its ledger balance (the LEDGERBAL field your accounting app compares against) is the statement's closing balance. When a row does not reconcile, or the statement prints no running balance to check, you first see which rows need checking and confirm that you have compared them with the original statement. Rows without a date or amount are left out of the file, and the tool tells you how many.
File details
What's inside the OFX file
| OFX field | What we write |
|---|---|
| Version | OFX 1.02 (SGML), the format GnuCash, Moneydance, Xero and Quicken for Mac read |
| STMTTRN | One record per transaction: TRNTYPE (CREDIT or DEBIT), DTPOSTED, TRNAMT with sign, NAME and MEMO |
| FITID | A stable ID built from date, amount and description, so re-importing the same text-PDF transactions is recognised as a duplicate |
| NAME / MEMO | NAME holds the first 32 characters of the description; MEMO keeps the full text and any reference number |
| CURDEF | The currency detected on the statement, or USD if none is printed |
| LEDGERBAL | The closing balance after reconciliation, dated on the last transaction |
| BANKACCTFROM | The account number or nickname you enter (letters, digits and hyphens), so later imports map to the same account |
Sample: a fictional US checking statement
This 3-page sample statement has 35 transactions from 2026-08-02 to 2026-08-31. Every balance reconciles, so the OFX file's LEDGERBAL is -$2,197.71. The first three transactions look like this:

Import guide
Import the OFX file into your accounting software
| Software | Menu path | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| GnuCash | File → Import → Import OFX/QFX… | Pick the GnuCash account the first time; GnuCash remembers it for later files with the same account ID. The import matcher flags transactions that already exist. |
| Xero | Accounting → Bank accounts → Manage account → Import a statement | Browse to the .ofx file and click Import, then reconcile the statement lines against contacts and accounts. |
| Moneydance | File → Import, or drag the file into the window | Choose the account to import into; tick "Remember this choice" to skip the question next time. Duplicate FITIDs are recognised. |
| QuickBooks Online | Bank transactions → Link account ▾ → Upload from file | Choose the .ofx file and the bank account. QuickBooks Online accepts files up to 350 KB and 1,000 transactions per upload. |
| Quicken for Mac | File → Import → Bank or Brokerage File (OFX, QFX) | Quicken may expect a .QFX file from a participating bank. If it rejects the OFX, use the CSV download and Quicken's CSV import instead. |
| Quicken for Windows | File → File Import → Web Connect File | Accepts .QFX only, not plain OFX. Use the CSV download instead. |
Tip: import one statement at a time and check the account balance in your app against the statement's closing balance before importing the next month.
When another format fits better
OFX is for accounting and personal finance software. If you want to sort, filter or total the transactions yourself, the bank statement PDF to Excel converter gives you an Excel workbook or a CSV file from the same conversion. Pages are counted once per conversion, so a converted statement can be downloaded in every format. Bookkeeping in TallyPrime? Use bank statement to Tally for voucher XML. PDF to OFX FAQ
Is this PDF to OFX converter free?
Yes, you can convert 10 pages per day without an account, and the OFX download is included. Pro adds more pages and batch conversion of up to 20 statements at once.
Can I convert a scanned bank statement to OFX?
Yes. Scanned pages and photos go through image recognition before the balance check. Recognition errors are more likely on scans, so review highlighted rows before you export the OFX file.
Which OFX version do you create?
OFX 1.02 in SGML format, with a bank statement (STMTRS) for a checking account. Most personal finance and accounting tools that import OFX files read this version.
Will importing the same month twice create duplicates?
Each transaction has a stable FITID built from its date, amount and description. GnuCash, Moneydance and Quicken use FITIDs to recognise transactions they have already imported, so re-importing the same transactions from a text PDF is recognised. Scans can be read slightly differently each time, so check the import screen for possible duplicates.
Can I import the OFX file into QuickBooks?
QuickBooks Online can upload an OFX file: open Bank transactions, choose Link account ▾ → Upload from file and select the .ofx file. QuickBooks Desktop only imports .QBO Web Connect files, so use the CSV download there.
Why is the OFX download asking me to check rows first?
Some running balances did not reconcile, or a row is missing its date or amount. An OFX import posts every amount into your books, so the tool asks you to compare the highlighted rows with your statement before downloading.
Do you store my statement?
No. Original files and passwords stay in your browser. Only extracted text and scanned-page images are sent for conversion, and they are not saved. The OFX file is created in your browser.
